Student lends illustration skills to history of East Riding Constabulary
Bishop Burton College Foundation Degree Design student Richard Tienes of Hull has had his illustrations published in a book that takes a humorous look back at the old East Riding Constabulary.
The book, which is written by retired police officer Ken Brooke, is entitled ‘‘Police Incidents of the Humorous Kind’ True Life Tales of Officers of the Old East Riding Constabulary’, and contains stories and anecdotes donated by members of the old constabulary.
Veterans continue to meet up annually despite the force ceasing to exist by 1968.
“I always attend the reunion of the Old East Riding Force,” said Ken. “We meet up for dinner once a year and share memories and anecdotes.
“At the time the idea for a book came into being I was doing fundraising work for Yorkshire Cancer Research and I felt that publishing a collection of these tales would be an excellent way of raising money for the charity.
“At a time when there seems to be very little to smile about, I thought something light-hearted like this may bring a smile to people’s faces.”
“It was suggested that I contact Bishop Burton College, so I did and I was put in touch with Andy Hampel, one of the art and design tutors.
“Andy felt he had a student who would do an excellent job and it was then that I was introduced to Richard.
“I was really excited by the prospect of producing illustrations for a book that was going to be published,” said Richard. “I usually just draw for my own amusement, but to be involved in a project like this, which is perhaps a bit more mainstream, is fantastic.”
Richard is currently in the second year of a Foundation Degree in Spatial Design and is using his experience at College and working on the book to develop his drawing skills.

Students enjoy triple success at National floristry competition

Learners from Bishop Burton College’s Foundation Degree in Floristry Design have enjoyed a clutch of successes at the Society of Florists Annual Show, which was held in Nottingham recently.
First and second year learners all took part; with second year student Pip Croft taking first place in the Flowers and Plants Association Competition, first year learners gaining a second place in the Society of Floristry Annual Show College Competition and another second year student, Cindy Marshall-Day, scooping a third in the Chrysal Competition.
This is the first time learners from Bishop Burton College have achieved this number of placings at the show.
The theme for the entire show was ‘A La Mode’ and Pip, who hails from Derbyshire but lives in Lund during the week, was asked to design packaging for a top 10 houseplant using a supermodel as her muse.
“I opted for the peace lily and quickly decided that the model Erin O’Connor would suit the elegant, willowy curves of the plant,” said Pip.
“I designed a ‘flat pack’ design in foam sheet with a shape based on the curves and silhouette of Erin. I chose a monochrome palette and made sure the design was user-friendly and easy to sell in retail outlets as specified in the brief.”
Pip’s design attracted many compliments from the judges who felt it would be easy to mass market and would have instant appeal. The design attracted a huge score of 92 out of 100.
Judge Ms H Shaw was very impressed with Pip’s creation quoting ‘immaculate staging’, ‘superb proportion and visual balance’ and ‘well demonstrated colour composition’ among the piece’s strengths.
“I absolutely loved doing it,” Pip continued. “It gave me the chance to be really creative and as I’m a bit of a perfectionist I enjoyed building a few prototypes to make sure I got it just right.
“When I heard I’d won my jaw dropped. I didn’t quite believe it and it still hasn’t quite sunk in.”
Cindy Marshall-Day who comes from Scunthorpe came third in the Chrysal Competition to design a hand-tied piece, again on the theme of A La Mode.
College farm celebrates brace of fatstock successes
Bishop Burton College farm is celebrating after the cream of the farm’s butcher’s lambs took first prize in their category and were named Supreme Champions at the recent Hull Livestock Market Christmas Fatstock Show.
A group of five of the College’s lambs also took first place in the light lamb section of the Thirsk Christmas Fatstock Show. The lambs were also named reserve champions at the show.
Incredibly, the lambs shown at the Hull show sold for £160 per head to a local butcher. Similar lambs usually sell for around £70 or £80 per head.
The lambs were prepared for show by a group of the College’s National Diploma Agriculture students, who were charged with washing and clipping out the animals.
Edward Mills (17) was one of the learners involved with the preparations.
“It’s great that the lambs won at the show and we’re really proud,” said Edward. “It’s fantastic that we get to take part in activities and events like this and that we have such a good college farm.”
The lambs were out of a pure-bred Texel and sired by a Dutch Texel. They were born in mid-April.
Farm manager Dominic Naylor believes the achievements show that Bishop Burton College is committed to producing top-quality livestock.
He said: “These fantastic results are the culmination of a year’s worth or hard work by students and farm staff.
“The success demonstrates a significant improvement in carcass conformation of the lambs produced here at the College and the students took a real interest in selecting and preparing the animals for show which was very pleasing.”
The lambs shown at Thirsk were prepared for show by agriculture students Tom Harper (17) and Mark Fisher (19) under the close supervision of Bishop Burton degree student Will Fawcett and his brother Edward – both familiar faces on the showing circuit.
These latest successes follow a raft of improvements over the last three years in flock management at the College, including a new sheep facility which comprises 18 pens, each capable of holding 40-50 animals, with a large, dedicated lambing area and which is also built to enable mechanised feeding.
